advocating for what you want
January 24, 2025
last time we elevated the key relationship skill of setting flexible boundaries.
with increased skill in this area we can move on to another key relational skill: advocating for what you want.
many people hesitate to express their needs out of fear or worry, but by clearly expressing your wants and needs, you create openness and understanding, which builds trust.
alternatively, assuming others know your needs often leads to frustration and resentment.
advocating for yourself prevents misunderstandings and makes your desires clear.
advocating for yourself
STEP 1: KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
take time to reflect on your needs. what do you truly want in your relationships—more time together, better communication, or more support?
STEP 2: COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY
use “i” statements like: “i feel more connected when we spend time together without distractions.”
this helps communicate your needs without making the other person defensive.
STEP 3: BE OPEN TO COMPROMISE
advocating doesn’t mean you’ll always get exactly what you want, but it creates room for finding solutions that work for both people.
result: stronger connections
when both people openly share their needs, relationships become more transparent and satisfying, with fewer misunderstandings and more genuine connection.
final thought
advocating for what you want is a winning strategy for any relationship as it creates a foundation of trust and respect.
i invite you to take time today to practice it in your relationships.
wishing you vital connections,
