levels of listening to improve communication

related to my last post on receiving feedback, i wanted to address the specific skill of listening.

here’s a framework i took from my time with THE MANKIND PROJECT that highlights various levels of listening to improve communication.

without further ado:

five levels of listening to improve communication

LEVEL 0: ELSEWHERE at this level, listening is nearly non-existent. you’re present in body but not in mind—merely waiting for your turn to speak. IMPACT: often leads to missed connections and misunderstandings.

LEVEL 1: SELF-CENTERED here, you’re actively listening, but your focus is on how the conversation affects you. your responses are filtered through your own feelings and judgments. RESULTS: creates a barrier to genuine understanding.

LEVEL 2: CURIOUS curiosity is key at this level. you’re listening with empathy and a genuine desire to understand the speaker’s perspective, without letting your own biases interfere. RESULTS: fosters deeper connections and more meaningful conversations.

LEVEL 3: ENGAGED engagement goes beyond just hearing words. it involves paying attention to non-verbal cues such as tone and body language, and tuning into your intuition. RESULTS: shows respect and helps you grasp the full context of the conversation.

LEVEL 4: IMPACTFUL this is where listening becomes truly transformative. you hear not just the words, but the underlying emotions and intentions, creating space for new possibilities and deeper insights. RESULTS: profound impact on the speaker and the conversation as a whole.

ACTION ITEM: use the scale above to rate your level of listen during conversations throughout the week ahead.

try using the following tips to improve your listening ability.

tips to improve your listening skills:

  • practice presence: focus on the speaker without distractions.
  • suspend judgment: listen without immediately filtering through your own lens.
  • cultivate curiosity: ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest.
  • read non-verbal cues: pay attention to tone, body language, and emotions.
  • seek deeper understanding: listen for the underlying messages and feelings.

WHY DEEPER LEVELS OF LISTENING MATTERS

understanding these levels of listening can help you enhance your relationships, whether personal or professional.

by moving beyond superficial listening and embracing deeper levels, you can foster more meaningful connections and achieve more productive interactions.

simple but not easy.

you got it,

donald
