the power of appreciation in relationships
February 10, 2025
this time, we’ll look at one of the most overlooked but powerful relationship (and life) skills: appreciation.
life gets busy, and it’s easy to focus on what’s not working. but remember this: what you appreciate, appreciates.
just like in finance, where investments grow over time, relationships flourish when we consistently invest in them by expressing appreciation.
according to leading relationship experts, john and julie gottman of the gottman institute, appreciation is a corner stone in any successful relationship.
by recognizing your partner’s positive actions, no matter how small, you nurture connection, trust, and respect.
this is true in ANY relationship btw.
why appreciation matters
appreciation isn’t about empty compliments.
it’s about truly seeing and valuing the ways your partner shows up, even in everyday moments.
whether it’s them picking up groceries, supporting you, or making you laugh, acknowledging these things builds a stronger bond.
when we stop noticing them, frustration often takes over.
shift your focus in relationships
many couples say, “i’d appreciate them more if they did xyz…” but here’s a reframe: start appreciating what’s already working, and you may notice other positive shifts, too.
encourage don’t discourage.
feeling seen and valued makes us naturally more inclined to give back.
how to practice appreciation in relationships
- say it out loud: don’t assume your partner knows -regularly express, “i appreciate you for…” (be specific: behavior + impact)
- write it down: leave a note or send a quick text to show you’re paying attention.
- acknowledge effort: appreciate the effort your partner puts in, even when things aren’t perfect.
challenge for the week ahead
each day this week, find one thing to appreciate about your partner (family member, coworker or friend!) and share it.
watch how it sparks new energy in your relationship.
remember: what you appreciate, appreciates.
wishing you an energetic week,
