don’t make it worse: the pause that protects connection
welcome to the second post taken frm my march unmaddness newsletter series — a weekly invitation to explore simple practices that bring more ease, connection, and clarity into your life and relationships.
this week’s strategy may sound overly simple, but it can change everything:
don’t make it worse.
when tension rises, restraint is power
we’ve all been there — caught in a tough conversation, frustrated, misunderstood, or triggered.
and in those moments, it’s easy to lash out, shut down, or escalate.
but one of the most impactful relational skills is the ability to pause.
to breathe.
to not make it worse.
this doesn’t mean suppressing your feelings or avoiding hard truths.
it means creating enough space to choose a better response — one that preserves connection instead of rupturing it.
the practice: choose the pause
this week, try this:
- when you feel emotionally triggered, pause.
- ask: “will this make things better or worse?”
- if the answer isn’t clear, step back. return when you’re calmer.
these small moments of mindfulness can prevent major blowups.
and over time, they help build trust — within yourself and your relationships.

formal meditation not for you?
here’s a recent mindfulness blog i did that offers some everyday suggestions for developing mindfulness.
sometimes the most loving thing you can do is say nothing… for now.
it’s not about fixing, it’s about not adding fuel
especially in relationships, you don’t always need to fix things immediately.
sometimes it’s enough to just avoid throwing another log on the fire.
closing reflection:
what can you choose not to make worse this week?
sometimes peace begins with one deep breath.
sending well wishes,
