relational mindfulness: transforming your inner critic with compassion
March 17, 2025
we’re diving into mindfulness again – this time, focusing on a commonly misunderstood element: the relational aspect.
a quick reminder: mindfulness is paying attention (intention) to the present moment (focus), without judgement (relational).
the inner critic
let’s explore the relational aspect of mindfulness by elevating the shared human experience of the judgmental inner critic.
by inner critic i mean that judgmental voice replaying mistakes, highlighting flaws, or critiquing others.
while this voice might be helpful occasionally, it’s often more harmful than supportive.
relational mindfulness
mindfulness gives you a new way to relate to yourself:
- instead of judgment, you approach yourself with kindness and curiosity.
- you notice thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without labeling them as “good” or “bad.”
- you observe your inner critic rather than reacting to it.
over time, this practice reveals an important truth: your thoughts aren’t facts. they’re just mental events passing through.
mindfulness also helps you honor (as opposed to villainize) your emotions and bodily sensations, making room for greater clarity and self-understanding.
transformation
over time this shift will transform your relationship with yourself – and others.
you start to notice patterns: recurring stories, emotional triggers, and habitual reactions.
with mindful awareness, you gain agency:
- the choice to respond differently.
- the choice to treat yourself with compassion.
- the choice to rewrite your narratives in ways that support you instead of undermine you.
this leads perfectly into next week’s topic: building a better future.
ACTION ITEM: start practicing relational mindfulness today with this simple step:
- when you notice a critical thought, pause.
- take a deep breath.
- soften that inner voice.
- if it helps, ask yourself, “if a friend felt this way, how would i respond?” then offer yourself the same kindness.
mindfulness isn’t about silencing your inner critic – it’s about changing your relationship with it.
when you meet yourself with gentleness and acceptance, you open the door to growth and new possibilities.
here’s to great relationships,
