how yielding can save you relationship

according to the gottman institute, in heterosexual relationships, there is an 81% chance the relationship ends if a man doesn’t accept his partner’s influence.

while this research focused on heterosexual couples, i’m confident this applies to any adult relationship, romantic or otherwise.

fixed imbalance in any aspect of a relationships is generally no good.

so how do you fix this major blunder?

the art of yielding

one way to bring necessary balance and flexibility to your relationships is through yielding.

yielding, in its essence, is the ability to step back, make space, and allow your partner to take the lead.

it’s not about surrendering your identity or compromising your values but rather creating a harmonious flow where both individuals contribute to the rhythm of the relationship.

here’s why embracing the concept of yielding is a game-changer:

  1. connection: yielding is like a dance partner sensing the subtle cues and movements of the other. it deepens the connection by promoting attunement and responsiveness.
  2. understanding: yielding requires active listening and a willingness to understand the other person’s perspective, opening the door to empathy and a richer understanding of one another.
  3. flexibility: yielding adapts to the ebb and flow of life together, creating a resilient foundation that can withstand challenges.
  4. growth: allows for the exploration of new ideas, shared goals, and mutual aspirations.

how can you incorporate yielding into your relationship?

  1. practice active listening: truly listen to someone without formulating your response in your mind. let their words sink in before expressing your thoughts.
  2. express vulnerability: share your thoughts and feelings openly, creating a safe space for the other person to do the same. vulnerability is where connection happens.
  3. choose your battles: not every disagreement requires a firm stance. sometimes, yielding on smaller matters allows for a smoother journey through the more significant ones.
  4. celebrate each other’s strengths: recognize and appreciate the unique strengths and qualities the other person brings to the relationship. encourage each other to shine in your individual ways.

in the rhythm of relationships, yielding is the fluctuation and variance that weaves understanding, connection, and growth; it creates harmony, where both participants contribute to the beautiful choreography of relational success.

wishing you a seamless dance,

donald
